Spanish youth take to the streets

One of the main squares in Valencia last weekend was completely occupied by youth protestors. Throughout the day it was manned by activists, and as night descended the numbers swelled, literally taking over the historic square.
The young people are angry at how the government is handling the economy and the high unemployment rate (the highest in the EU).
One Spanish man I spoke with, Javier, said: “Spain has never been like this before. It seems like we have all finally woken up. There is huge discontent here with the government on so many issues. And this is the forum for us to express it.”
There has been huge discontent in Ireland too. But nobody has taken to the streets, and if the young people and students don’t take the initiative like what is happening in Spain, then it has no hope of getting off the ground.
